Hand Block Printing

Hand Block Printing

This traditional craft involves transferring designs onto fabric using hand-chiseled wooden blocks. Layer by layer, artisans imprint stories of heritage, skill, and beauty that transform simple fabric into art.

Handcrafted wooden blocks, carved with precision, are pressed onto fabric to create patterns that feel alive. Each impression carries the touch of an artisan, turning plain cloth into a tapestry of culture, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.

How It Is Done

Discover the intricate process behind each hand block printed masterpiece

1. Carving the Block

Skilled artisans hand-carve intricate motifs like flowers, animals, paisleys, and geometric patterns on wooden blocks made from teak or sheesham wood.

2. Preparing the Fabric

The cloth (cotton, silk, linen, etc.) is thoroughly washed and dried to remove starch and impurities, ensuring perfect dye absorption.

3. Mixing the Dye

Colors are carefully prepared using traditionally natural dyes, now often eco-friendly synthetic dyes for vibrant, lasting colors.

4. Printing

The artisan dips the carved block in dye and presses it firmly onto the fabric. Each color requires a separate block for precision.

5. Drying & Finishing

The printed fabric is dried naturally in the sun, then washed and carefully ironed to fix the color and complete the process

The Result

A unique, handcrafted piece of art that carries centuries of tradition and the soul of the artisan who created it.

How to Take Care of Block Printed Fabrics

Follow these simple guidelines to keep your hand block printed fabrics beautiful for years

1. Wash Gently

Hand wash or use gentle machine cycle with cold water to preserve colors and fabric.

2. Use Mild Detergents

Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach. Use gentle, pH-neutral detergents only.

3. Separate Colors

Wash dark and light colors separately to prevent color bleeding.

4. Do Not Soak Long

Avoid prolonged soaking as it may cause colors to fade or bleed.

5. Dry in Shade

Air dry in shade to prevent color fading from direct sunlight exposure.

6. Iron Carefully

Use medium heat and iron on reverse side to protect the printed design.

7. Don’t Machine-Dry

keep the dryer. High heat can damage fibers and fade colors quickly.

8. Store Properly

Fold neatly and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
